In a significant move to support the agricultural sector, the West Bengal government has initiated a direct financial assistance program for over 100,000 potato farmers affected by adverse weather conditions. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced this initiative on Tuesday, highlighting the allocation of ₹158 crore aimed at alleviating the financial burden on farmers during the current rabi season.Notably, this scheme requires no premium payments from farmers, as the state government covers all associated costs.
The financial aid is part of a broader commitment, with the state having disbursed over ₹37,200 crore to farmers under this scheme to date. In addition to supporting farmers, the Chief Minister also revealed that the second installment of funds for the Banglar Bari housing project will be credited to the accounts of 1.2 million beneficiaries starting Tuesday. This initiative, which previously provided ₹7,200 crore to beneficiaries last December, aims to enhance housing accessibility for the underprivileged. The state is investing approximately ₹1,450 crore for this second installment, ensuring that financial support reaches those in need directly and efficiently.
