IndiaS Mango Export Crisis: Millions in Losses Due to Shipment Rejections
Despite the soaring demand for India’s flavorful mangoes in the Western world, recent events have led to the rejection of shipments worth crores of rupees by the United States. This has left exporters facing significant financial losses and a logistical nightmare.
Reports indicate that at least 15 mango shipments from India were canceled at various U.S. airports, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta, this month. The estimated loss for Indian exporters is around ₹4.27 crore.Compounding the issue, they now face hefty fees to bring the rejected mangoes back home. Some exporters are even considering abandoning the mangoes in the U.S. altogether. The export process was reportedly completed on May 8 and 9 in Navi Mumbai, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection flagged issues with the export documentation, leading to the massive rejection of these shipments.
Authorities have stated that either the export process must be redone or the mangoes will have to be destroyed. This situation has left affected exporters frustrated, as they believe that the significant losses stem solely from bureaucratic errors in documentation. The emotional toll on these businesses is palpable, as they grapple with the fallout from what should have been a fruitful export season.
