The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a chargesheet against former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik in connection with alleged corruption in the Kiru hydropower project. Alongside Malik, four others have also been implicated in this case, which has raised serious questions about governance and accountability in the region. The allegations stem from a 2022 investigation initiated by the Jammu and Kashmir government, revealing significant irregularities involving several contractors. The controversy escalated in 2024 when claims surfaced of a staggering ₹2,200 crore in corruption linked to the project. Following these revelations, the CBI conducted raids across eight locations in Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir. Malik, who served as the governor from August 23, 2018, to October 30, 2019, previously alleged that he was offered a bribe of ₹300 crore to approve two files related to the Kiru project. In response to the chargesheet, Malik took to social media to vehemently deny the allegations, stating that he has been hospitalized for several days due to serious illness, yet authorities continue to raid his home. This unfolding saga not only highlights the complexities of political accountability but also raises concerns about the integrity of public office in India.
