In a heart-wrenching incident that underscores the valor and commitment of the Indian Armed Forces, 23-year-old Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari tragically lost his life while attempting to save a fellow soldier in Sikkim. having joined the Sikkim Scouts last December, Shashank was leading a patrol team in a remote mountainous region when the unforeseen tragedy struck.On Friday morning,while crossing a wooden bridge,a soldier named Stephen Subba slipped and fell into the raging river below. Without a moment’s hesitation, Shashank jumped into the turbulent waters to rescue him, demonstrating remarkable courage. Alongside him, another soldier, Naik Pukar, also entered the river to assist. Together, they managed to pull Stephen to safety, but the strong current proved too much for Shashank. Despite their best efforts, he was swept away by the relentless flow of the river.
The Indian Army later reported that Shashank’s body was discovered approximately 800 meters from the incident site,nearly half an hour after the rescue attempt. He leaves behind a grieving family, including his father, mother, and sister. The Army has lauded Shashank’s bravery and sense of duty, stating that his sacrifice will inspire future generations.
