Clashes Erupt in Maheshtala Over Market Dispute: A Night of chaos
In Maheshtala, tensions flared into violence as two groups clashed over market stalls, leading to widespread destruction and injuries. The chaos unfolded with vandalism of shops and vehicles, including police cars, as the situation escalated throughout the day and into the night.
The conflict left several individuals injured, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police and a police sergeant, while a female constable also faced the brunt of the violence. The scene was chaotic, with bricks raining down from rooftops aimed at law enforcement, all occurring within a mere 200 meters of the Rabindranagar police station. Despite the police’s attempts to manage the situation with limited personnel, they appeared overwhelmed by the enraged crowd. Acknowledging their delayed response, police officials admitted that by the time they acted, the situation had spiraled out of control.
As the violence continued, senior police officials, including the ADG of South Bengal and the DIG of the Presidency Range, arrived on the scene. After hours of turmoil, law enforcement finally took action, deploying batons and tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd.However, the unrest persisted, with the area experiencing multiple flare-ups even late into the night.In response to the escalating situation, police were compelled to invoke Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code, establishing checkpoints to maintain order in the volatile environment.
