Residents of Siliguri are facing extreme hardship as a severe water crisis grips the city, leaving 30 out of 47 wards without access to drinking water for three consecutive days. The local municipality has attributed the crisis to difficulties in treating the murky waters of the Teesta River. As a result, residents are struggling to secure even the most basic necessity-clean drinking water. Calls for the resignation of Mayor Gautam Deb have emerged from opposition parties, including the Left and BJP, who are demanding immediate action to resolve the situation.
In the absence of municipal water supply, many residents are forced to rely on expensive bottled water, while those with access to wells are using that water for their daily needs. The situation has become dire, with the local CPM threatening to stage protests if the crisis is not addressed swiftly. Historically, many in Siliguri have depended on well water, but with the current crisis, the struggle for water has intensified, highlighting the urgent need for enduring solutions to ensure access to clean drinking water for all.
