Abanindranath Tagore’s Historic Home demolished in Santiniketan
In a shocking turn of events, the historic residence of renowned artist Abanindranath Tagore has been demolished in Santiniketan. This demolition has been in the works for several months, with attempts made as early as February to tear down the structure. At that time, the Bolpur Municipality intervened, halting the demolition to preserve the cultural heritage associated with the site.
The house, steeped in the legacy of Tagore, was previously sold, and plans were in place for a multi-story building to replace it. On the day of the demolition, promoters used heavy machinery to raze the entire structure, despite the absence of comments from the promoters or the former owners regarding the situation. BJP leader Tushar Kanti Ghosh shared a video of the demolition on Facebook, criticizing the West Bengal government under Mamata Banerjee for allowing such disrespect towards a world-renowned artist’s legacy, suggesting that this reflects poorly on the state’s cultural values.
