Kolkata’s rooftop Restaurants Face New Regulations: No selling or Renting of Common areas
In a significant move, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has reiterated that rooftop common areas in residential buildings cannot be sold or rented out. This decision, announced by Mayor Firhad hakim, aims to preserve these spaces for communal use. The state government is set to issue a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to formalize these regulations, with a meeting scheduled to discuss the specifics regarding rooftop restaurants.
The mayor’s proclamation comes amid growing concerns about the commercialization of these shared spaces. Previously, there had been discussions about allowing rooftop cafes and other businesses, but the municipality has now firmly stated that such ventures will not be permitted. This decision reflects a broader commitment to maintaining public access to communal areas, ensuring that they remain available for all residents rather than being privatized for profit. As the city grapples with urban development and the need for public spaces, this regulation could serve as a model for other municipalities facing similar challenges.
