Celebrate Mango Season: Azimganj’s Mango Festival Promises a flavorful Experience
As the mango season unfolds, the vibrant town of Azimganj in Murshidabad is gearing up for its much-anticipated mango Festival, running from June 1 to June 30. Organized by Pradeep Chopra, Chairman of the Murshidabad Heritage Growth Society, this festival aims to showcase the rich diversity of mango varieties found in the region, while also offering visitors a chance to savor delectable mango-based dishes. With India being the largest mango producer globally, boasting over 500 varieties, Murshidabad alone is home to around 150 unique types, including the famed Kohitur, Nawab Pasand, and Mohanbhog.
Tho, the festival comes at a time when local farmers are grappling with economic challenges, leading many to abandon mango cultivation. Despite the region’s rich agricultural heritage, the profitability of mango farming has dwindled, prompting farmers to seek alternative ventures. In a bid to preserve their cultural legacy, plans are underway to establish a museum in Gosaba, near the Sundarbans, dedicated to the history and significance of mango cultivation. This initiative not onyl aims to celebrate the beloved fruit but also to provide a sustainable future for the farmers and the community. As the festival approaches, it serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between tradition and economic viability in the heart of India’s mango country.
