In a troubling turn of events, a young man from Assam has turned to the Supreme Court after his mother was allegedly detained unlawfully by the state government. Since her disappearance, he has been left in the dark about her whereabouts and well-being. The apex court has agreed to hear the plea of 26-year-old Yunus, raising questions about the treatment of individuals in detention camps and the legal processes surrounding them.Yunus claims that the government should produce his missing mother, Monwara Bewa, in court. She had previously spent a notable amount of time in a foreigners’ detention camp, where her situation was dire. In 2019,the Supreme Court had ordered the release of Monwara and several others from these camps. Though, Yunus alleges that on May 24 of that year, his mother was summoned to the police station under the pretext of recording a statement, only to be detained again shortly after. This incident has not only raised concerns about the legal rights of detainees but also highlights the emotional turmoil faced by families caught in such bureaucratic mazes. As the case unfolds, it serves as a poignant reminder of the complexities surrounding citizenship and human rights in India.
