80% of Women Prisoners in Bankura Charged with Domestic Violence
During a recent visit to the Bankura correctional facility, Archana Majumdar, a member of the national Commission for Women, expressed deep concern over alarming statistics regarding female inmates. Out of 26 women incarcerated, a staggering 20 are accused of domestic violence, highlighting a troubling trend in the region. This visit aimed to assess the health and overall infrastructure of the facility, as well as to engage with the women about their experiences.
Majumdar noted that the conditions in Bankura’s correctional facility differ considerably from those in other districts of the state. The women here face charges ranging from trespassing and theft to robbery and trafficking of women and children. The high percentage of domestic violence cases among these inmates raises critical questions about societal issues and the support systems available for women in distress. As the conversation around women’s rights and safety continues to evolve, the situation in Bankura serves as a stark reminder of the challenges many face, often leading them to a life behind bars.
