Severe Flooding and Landslides Devastate Northeast India Amidst Monsoon Rains
The relentless monsoon rains have wreaked havoc across Northeast India, especially in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, where the situation has escalated into a crisis. Over the past two days, at least 30 lives have been lost due to floods and landslides, with thousands more affected. The Indian Air Force has been deployed for rescue operations, successfully evacuating 14 individuals from the Bomjir River near the Assam-Arunachal border. Simultaneously occurring, Tripura’s capital, Agartala, is also grappling with severe flooding, as incessant rains have caused rivers to swell dangerously.
In the wake of this natural disaster, communication has been severely disrupted, especially along National Highway 17,which connects assam and Meghalaya. This has left many areas isolated, including parts of North Sikkim where tourists remain stranded. Central Home Minister Amit Shah has reached out to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim, assuring them of all possible assistance. The floods have impacted around 78,000 residents across 15 districts in Assam alone, with nearly 3,000 people in Manipur also facing dire circumstances. In just 48 hours,883 homes have collapsed, and the situation remains precarious as water levels continue to rise in Tripura’s rivers, particularly the Howrah River, which is now above the danger mark.
