The flood situation in Assam has escalated dramatically, with 21 districts submerged and over 700,000 people affected. As the monsoon season begins, concerns are mounting about the potential for further rainfall and worsening conditions. The death toll has reached 19, with no new fatalities reported recently, but the threat remains as one person is still missing.
On wednesday,two lives were lost,and the Brahmaputra and barak rivers,among others,are flowing above danger levels. Flood warnings have been issued in multiple areas, with 1,500 villages reported as impacted. The worst-hit region is Karimganj, where entire villages are underwater, forcing over 200,000 residents to navigate life amidst the deluge. The Assam state Disaster Management Authority has reported that approximately 15,000 hectares of agricultural land have been inundated, leading to critically important losses in farming. Additionally, over 500,000 livestock have been affected, highlighting the extensive damage to both livelihoods and the local economy. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has visited the flood-affected areas in North Guwahati, emphasizing the urgent need for relief and support.
