In a significant turn of events, junior doctors Debashis Halder and Asfakulla Naya have approached the Kolkata High Court, contesting their recent postings which they claim do not align with the counseling results. Despite following the proper procedures, they find themselves assigned to locations far from their preferences, raising questions about the transparency of the health departmentS decisions.
The duo’s legal action comes after they were reportedly denied their chosen postings following a counseling session. Halder was initially assigned to Howrah District Hospital as a Senior Resident Doctor, but his joining letter unexpectedly listed Gazole Hospital in Malda instead. Similarly, Aniket Mahato, who was ranked for a position at RG Kar Hospital, has been redirected to Raiganj Medical Collage, while Naya has been sent to Purulia’s Deben Mahato Sadar Hospital from Arambagh Medical College. In a bid for clarity, the doctors attempted to meet with Health Secretary Narayanaswaroop Nigam, only to be blocked from entering his office. This led to protests outside, with the junior doctors alleging that their postings are a result of political vendetta linked to their involvement in the Abhaya movement. the case is set to be heard next week, and the outcome could have significant implications for the junior medical community in West Bengal.
