Violent Protests Erupt in Manipur Over Arrest of Meitei Leader
In a dramatic escalation of tensions in Manipur, protests erupted following the arrest of Kanan Meitei, a leader of the Arambai tenggol group. Demonstrators took to the streets, threatening self-immolation if their demands were not met. The unrest has led to the suspension of internet services across five districts, including Imphal, as authorities struggle to maintain order amidst rising violence.
On Saturday afternoon, the Meitei community mobilized, blocking roads with burning tires and reportedly attacking police posts in kwakeithel. The arrest of Meitei, accused of inciting violence in a Kuki village, sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests in Imphal East and West. In response, the Manipur government imposed a curfew in Bishnupur and restricted gatherings in several areas. Despite these measures, clashes between protesters and security forces intensified, with reports of gunfire in Kwakeithel. As rumors circulated that the detained leader might be moved out of state, crowds gathered at Imphal Airport, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse them. Tragically, reports indicate that one person died due to police action, highlighting the volatile situation as additional forces were deployed to restore calm.
