In a significant turn of events, Kolkata Police have arrested Sharmistha Panoli, a law student from Pune, for allegedly making communal remarks on social media regarding the recent “Operation sindoor.” This incident has sparked a wave of reactions,including sharp criticism from BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut,who accused the Mamata Banerjee government of attempting to turn West Bengal into a “North Korea.”
Sharmistha’s comments came during a sensitive period when tensions were high along the India-Pakistan border. She expressed her views on the silence of several Bollywood actors, which later drew accusations of inciting communal sentiments. Following the uproar, complaints were filed against her, leading to her arrest. BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul has raised questions about the judicial custody imposed on Sharmistha, noting that she had repeatedly apologized for her comments. He also pointed out the lack of action from the state governance regarding similar remarks made by various Trinamool Congress leaders, questioning the consistency of the law’s submission in such cases.
