In a harrowing case that has shaken the community of Jalpaiguri, a local court has sentenced a man to death for the brutal rape and murder of a minor. The incident, which occurred in September 2023, involved the abduction of a young girl from her home, leading to a tragic series of events that ended with her body being discovered in a river. The court’s decision not only seeks to deliver justice but also aims to provide some solace to the grieving family.
On the fateful day of September 29, the young girl was playing outside her home in a village within the Dhupguri block when she went missing. Despite extensive searches throughout the night, her whereabouts remained unknown until three days later, when her body was found wrapped in a bag along the banks of the Dudua River. The police swiftly launched an investigation, utilizing CCTV footage from the area to apprehend the accused. Over 16 witnesses provided testimonies, and secret statements were recorded, ultimately leading to the conviction of the perpetrator. In addition to the death sentence,the court has ordered the District Legal Services Authority to provide the victim’s family with financial assistance of ₹5 lakh,acknowledging their immense loss and suffering.This case serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for stronger measures to protect the vulnerable and ensure justice in society.
