The Indian government has officially announced that the nationwide census process will commence on March 1, 2027. This census will mark a significant milestone as it will include the first-ever national enumeration, allowing citizens to self-enumerate online. This innovative approach enables individuals to provide their own and their family members’ data through a digital platform, making the process more accessible and efficient.
However, due to the challenging weather conditions in the Himalayan regions of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and parts of Uttarakhand, the census work in these areas will begin in October 2026. The declaration was made by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, on Monday. The last census was conducted in 2011, and although a new census was scheduled for 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic delayed those plans. After a long wait of 16 years, the census process is finally set to begin, coinciding with the recent decision to conduct a national enumeration alongside the census. This advancement is expected to provide valuable insights into the demographic landscape of India, reflecting the diverse and vibrant tapestry of its population.
