In the heart of Kathmandu, tensions are rising once again as the capital grapples with political unrest following the arrest of Kamal Thapa, the leader of the pro-monarchy Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) and former Deputy Prime Minister. Authorities have imposed a ban on gatherings across key roads, including the Kathmandu Ring Road, in a bid to maintain order amidst escalating protests demanding the restoration of the monarchy and Hindu identity in Nepal.
According to police spokesperson Apil Bohra, several RPP leaders were detained while attempting to breach security barriers to reach the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar. Meanwhile, pro-monarchy demonstrators have continued their protests in the Narayanchaur area for the fifth consecutive day. The RPP stands out as the only mainstream political party actively participating in this movement, which has gained momentum as March, led by former Maoist commander Durga Prasai. As calls grow louder for the reinstatement of the ousted King Gyanendra, public support for the movement appears to be swelling, reflecting a deep-seated desire among some segments of the population for a return to conventional governance.
