In a concerning development, West Bengal’s Chief Minister and Health Minister, Mamata Banerjee, has raised alarms over the infiltration of counterfeit medicines from Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh into the state.With reports indicating that around 50 to 55 fake drugs have entered the market, Banerjee has urged the management to take immediate action to prevent these perilous substances from being used in government hospitals or sold in pharmacies.During a meeting at Uttarkanya in Siliguri, Banerjee emphasized the need for vigilance among district and block-level health officials. she instructed the Chief medical Officers and Block Medical Officers to inspect hospital storerooms for these counterfeit products. The Chief Minister also highlighted the importance of public awareness, directing that lists of the counterfeit drugs and the companies behind them be prominently displayed outside pharmacies. This proactive approach aims to ensure that the public is informed and protected from the potential health risks posed by these fraudulent medications. In a bid to maintain safety, she suggested that surprise inspections may be necessary to root out these illicit drugs from the healthcare system.
