Central Government Official Faces Digital Arrest as Eight Taken into Custody

High-Ranking Government Official Falls Victim to Digital Arrest Scam in kolkata

In a shocking incident that highlights the growing menace of cybercrime, a senior official from the Indian government was reportedly subjected to a digital arrest in Kolkata. The accused, posing as CBI agents, allegedly detained the official at a hotel on park Street and extorted a staggering ₹25 lakh. This incident not only raises questions about the safety of high-profile individuals but also underscores the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures. The victim, Shouvik Sikdar, Deputy Director of the Indian Bureau of Standards, filed a complaint on May 23 after receiving a series of threatening calls on May 22. The callers, impersonating CBI officials, claimed that a parcel addressed to Sikdar contained illegal drugs, prompting them to demand a check of his bank accounts. Under duress, Sikdar was coerced into transferring ₹25 lakh online while being held at the hotel. The police swiftly launched an examination, leading to the arrest of eight individuals from Howrah and New town, including three apprehended near Eco Park.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities that even high-ranking officials face in the digital age. As cybercriminals become increasingly sophisticated, the need for robust security protocols and public awareness is more critical than ever. The authorities are now working diligently to unravel the network behind this elaborate scam, hoping to prevent future occurrences and restore faith in the safety of digital transactions.
