Controversial Waqf Law: Supreme Court Clarifies ItS Position on Islamic Concept
In a significant legal discourse, the Indian government has clarified its stance on the Waqf concept, asserting that while it is an Islamic idea, it does not constitute a fundamental part of Islam. This statement came during ongoing Supreme Court hearings regarding the Waqf Amendment Law, where Solicitor General Tushar Mehta emphasized that the government acts as a guardian of the property of 1.4 billion citizens, ensuring that public assets are not unlawfully transferred.
Mehta addressed concerns regarding the inclusion of non-Muslim members in the Waqf Board, stating that the board’s role is secular and focused on welfare activities. He dismissed claims that the government is creating a false narrative about property rights, insisting that the need for proof to protect Waqf properties is exaggerated. The discussions have sparked widespread debate, with the bill recently passed in Parliament, and further hearings scheduled, indicating that this issue will continue to resonate within the community and beyond.
