Hamas Rejects U.S. Ceasefire proposal Amid Ongoing Violence in Gaza
In a significant development, Hamas has firmly rejected teh U.S. proposal for a ceasefire, expressing skepticism about its effectiveness in halting the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The militant group argues that while discussions may be on the table, the reality on the ground remains dire, with continued bloodshed and famine threatening the lives of countless civilians.
A senior Hamas official shared with the BBC that the group’s leadership views the U.S. offer as inadequate, failing to address the essential needs of the Palestinian people. Bassem Naeem,a member of Hamas’s political faction, emphasized that although the proposal mentions a cessation of hostilities,it does not fulfill any of their community’s demands. This rejection comes in stark contrast to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s earlier acceptance of the U.S. ceasefire initiative. Meanwhile, the White House has confirmed that Israel has signed off on a proposal put forth by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, even though Hamas has yet to respond to this development. While the White House claims progress, Israel has remained silent on the matter. However, during a meeting with families of Israeli hostages held by Hamas,Netanyahu indicated that Israel is on board with Witkoff’s new proposal. As tensions escalate, the situation remains precarious, with the humanitarian crisis in Gaza deepening and the prospects for peace appearing increasingly distant.
