Bridge Collapse in Assam Disrupts connectivity to Tripura and Mizoram
The recent collapse of the Harang Bridge in Silchar, Assam, has sent shockwaves through the region, severing vital road links between assam, Tripura, and Mizoram. Just two months after its inauguration, the bridge gave way under the weight of two trucks, plunging them into the river below. Fortunately, the drivers and their companions escaped unharmed, but the incident has raised serious questions about the infrastructure management under the ruling BJP government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma.
This disaster has left the Barak Valley wholly cut off from the rest of the country, wiht the only option route, the Gamon Bridge on National Highway 6, also closed for repairs. As a result, all traffic heading to tripura and Mizoram has been rerouted through Silchar-Kalain, making the Harang Bridge a crucial link for the region. The opposition party, Trinamool Congress, has seized the opportunity to criticize the BJP’s “double-engine government,” questioning whether this is a betrayal of public trust. the collapse not only highlights the urgent need for better infrastructure but also raises concerns about the safety and reliability of newly constructed bridges in the region.
