The situation in Manipur has taken a turn for the worse as renewed clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities have erupted, particularly in the capital, Imphal. Following violent protests on Saturday afternoon, authorities have imposed curfews in several districts, including bishnupur, and suspended internet services too curb the spread of misinformation. The unrest is rooted in longstanding ethnic tensions, exacerbated by the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status, which has been met with fierce opposition from the Kuki-Zomi groups.
In response to the escalating violence, the Manipur police have prohibited gatherings of five or more people in key districts such as Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Kakching. Officials have expressed concerns that certain individuals may be deliberately inciting public emotions, potentially leading to further unrest. The state government has taken decisive measures, including a five-day internet blackout, to maintain law and order. Simultaneously occurring, the Meitei community has called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to intervene and address their grievances, asserting that the Kukis are primarily responsible for the ongoing conflict. As tensions simmer, the hope for a peaceful resolution hangs in the balance.
